Junio, ademas de ser esta vez un candente mes electoral, es un mes tragico en lo socioambiental en Peru.

Por un lado, es el mes del derrame de 151 kilos de mercurio inorganico en Choropampa, Cajamarca, hace once años y, por otro lado, de las matanzas de la Curva del diablo y la estacion 6, en Amazonas, hace dos años.

El primero impacto la salud de centenares de compatriotas y contamino el ambiente, el segundo enfrento a centenares de hermanos por un conflicto de intereses en defensa de derechos afectados (a la consulta previa, la cultura y el territorio, en particular).

Los peruanos no podemos enorgullecernos de ambos hechos, que tienen en comun una afectacion ambiental, pero  los podemos convertir en una palanca para aprender a tratarnos mejor entre nosotros y cuidar mejor el ambiente.

Para ello, difundamos todo lo posible lo que realmente paso en ambos sitios (aunque aun falta investigar mas en ambos casos), asi como sus consecuencias, y solidaricemonos con esos hermanos del Peru Profundo, que siguen sufriendo en silencio por una u otra razon, mientras en la gran Lima nuestras autoridades y funcionarios destacan por su lentitud de reflejos y falta de memoria respecto a sus promesas para con los mas vulnerables.

Por lo pronto, los peruanos mas afortunados, con casi todas nuestras necesidades cubiertas, tampoco podemos seguir viviendo dandoles la espalda, si queremos que se empiecen a cerrar esas dos heridas en nuestra nacionalidad.

El 2 de Junio de 2011, se cumple once años del mayor derrame mundial de mercurio metálico que afectó a más de un millar de pobladores de Choropampa, San Juan y Magdalena.

Autoridades corruptas o simplemente mediocres e indiferentes han hecho poco o nada por atender los graves problemas de salud que esa población sigue sufriendo.

Para Minera Yanacocha, el tema es un caso cerrado, pago dinero aquí y hallá a cambio de que firmaran "la renuncia a todos los derechos de defensa".

Todavía por vía legal, desde Grufides apoyamos a decenas de pobladores para encontrar justicia. Otros muchos abogados, incluidos un buró de Estados Unidos, han hecho grandes negociados con el sufrimiento de los pobladores.

Ojalà un cambio de gobierno permita que haya justicia para todos los que fueron afectados.

This is the story of an Andean paradise lost - lost after a devastating mercury spill. On June 2nd, 2000 at the Yanacocha goldmine in the Peruvian Andes, 151 kilograms of liquid mercury spilled over a 25-mile long area, contaminating three mountain villages, including Choropampa. The environmental catastrophe turned this quiet village into a hotbed of civil resistance.

The mine, jointly owned by a Peruvian company, the World Bank, and the Newmont Mining Corp of Colorado, insists the problem was quickly resolved, while villagers tell a starkly different story. CHOROPAMPA - THE PRICE OF GOLD follows their valiant struggle for health care and justice over a two-year period.

More than 900 people were poisoned from the spill. Nearly two years afterward, they continue to suffer the grave, debilitating effects of mercury poisoning. Proper medical care has not been provided to the villagers, and their health continues to deteriorate.

Villagers liken the mine owning foreigners to modern-day conquistadors, evoking the impoverished region's troubled, historical relationship with gold. A farmer tells the story of Atahualpa, the Inca ruler who was captured and murdered, not far from Choropampa, by Spanish explorers hungry for the precious metal. The treachery continues today he says, "Foreigners have been coming and taking our gold and Peru remains as poor as ever..."

But when the young, dashing Lot Saavedra is elected mayor the town finds new hope. Saavedra promises to win health care and fair compensation for the victims, and takes on corrupt politicians, company officials, and shady medical experts to do so. Months of tense, frustrated talks culminate in the dramatic blockade of the mine's vehicles, but cracks in the community threaten to undermine the villagers' resolve.

In cinéma vérité style, illustrated by archival footage, CHOROPAMPA - THE PRICE OF GOLD exposes the global gold trade's nasty underbelly, and makes it clear that the village was sacrificed to American business interests. The story is a poignant reminder of the real cost of gold.

Siguen pasando los meses y los días y las mecidas del gobierno también pasan sin dar síntomas de ninguna solución, por eso con mucha indignación los familiares de los policías fallecidos en el Baguazo del 05 junio están evaluando denunciar penalmente a los altos mandos quienes organizaron el operativo.
